Client: Quantum Dental Technologies Inc
The use of dental X-rays can be quite an unappealing practice to many. Our partner, Quantum Dental Technologies Inc, wished to provide its clientele with a better solution for the early detection of tooth decay and developed a new diagnostic aid. QDT drew on our extensive scientific expertise and know-how in the development of promising applications to ready its technology for further testing and regulatory approval with a view to expediting the system’s arrival on the market. We were tasked with producing a market-ready version of The Canary System®—a unique blend of luminescence and infrared (IR) technologies (PTR-LUM), by QDT co-founder Dr. Stephen Abrams.
It has been proved that the Canary System® is able to catch 93% of early caries, the dental term for tooth decay, compared with 27% for X-rays1.
Significant improvements were incorporated into the system, including a hand piece-mounted visible-range camera and data acquisition technology that converts combined PTR-LUM measurement data into visual output that dental staff can easily interpret. In only 14 months of close collaboration, the QDT-INO team successfully developed a prototype and obtained the legal approvals and certifications needed to release it on the market as a product.
The Canary System® uses a handheld, low-power, pulsating laser to examine teeth. It measures the radiant heat and light signatures emitted by teeth in response to identify early signs of demineralization well before they are visible by X-ray, allowing dentists to treat decay before fillings are required.
