Raman Lidar

Raman remote sensing makes it possible to remotely compile chemical data on various substances and materials without contact or sample preparation.

We develop systems capable of measuring trace quantities of gaseous pollutants at short range and larger concentrations at longer range. They can also be used to help identify minerals during mining operations or space exploration. Highly sensitive when used in resonant mode, our technology holds great potential for detecting trace amounts of gaseous compounds such as VOCs and explosive vapors. Work is currently underway to adapt the system to detect benzene as a tracer gas for leak detection on buried liquid pipelines.

Our systems are designed for the long-range detection of atmospheric gases and short-range detection of gaseous compounds in low concentrations (e.g., pollutants, traces of narcotics and explosives), as well as for short-range identification of minerals.

They use a wide range of lasers and wavelengths. Depending on the quantity or concentration of chemical species to detect, the operating range may vary from a few dozen meters to several kilometres. The systems are used mainly in following areas:

  • Mining
  • Space exploration
  • Defense and security
  • Environment (surveillance)

Our modular Raman system is highly versatile and enables clients to rapidly test applications and scale up application performance to minimize investment risk. Each system is custom designed and assembled for the client. By using dispersive systems and intensified multichannel detectors, we can craft versatile and sensitive solutions that are easy to adapt to specific needs. In gas applications, range-gated remote sensing also enables mapping distribution of a specific chemical species. What’s more, Raman and fluorescence technology can be combined in the same system for maximal flexibility.
